The recipe

I’ll be using the following materials:

  • 51×31 cm acrylic 8mm (roughly the size of a 22″ widescreen monitor)
  • A 22″ widescreen BenQ LCD matrix
  • Caulk paper as an alternative diffuser
  • 20 IR LED’s (OSRAM SHF485) — NO LONGER BEING USED
  • Aluminum profiles — NO LONGER BEING USED
  • MDF for the structure itself
  • 12v power adapter
  • 270 Ohm resistors — NO LONGER BEING USED
  • Modded XBox 360 Live Vision cam (easy to remove IR filter)
  • 2 IR lasers and two 120 degree line lenses (lenses here, lasers here).

Hey I wanted to know if you could post more photos? I like the idea of using IR lasers versus IR LED’s and I would like to see how you set it up :)
Your blog has been amazing! Can’t wait to build my table!

Hi ! Just built my first TFIR panel, too bad I found the lasers after I completed it ! I’m also interested in seeing how you set up the IR lasers…. can you use the near IR or better use true IR lasers ? How many do you need ?
I’m starting to think to build a much bigger panel (2m high), is one or two lasers still sufficent ?
What about user security ? User’s eyes don’t have to come in contact with the lasers…..
Anyway, amazing job, really !

Hey, I’m thinking of building my own LCD LLP and I was wondering how the Aixiz lasers worked for you? Thanks.

P.S. The setup looks great. Good luck.

Hi Anthony,

The Aixiz lasers were a breeze to use, and gave me plenty of brightness. I only used two, but if you have sufficient funds I would recommend mounting a laser in ever corner of the screen. The only thing that was quite a hassle for me to do was picking up the signal through the LCD backlight, which for some reason messed up my camera. So before buying lasers, you should do some research on band- or highpass filters (Thorlabs is a good place to start) and camera’s (I use a modded xbox live cam which worked sort of okay, but investing in a better camera is definitely a smart thing to do if you’re serious about this).

If you have any more questions, contact me on the address provided on the contact page.

Good luck,

Emiel
